O Trip to Europe
In early July, we headed to Europe to run in the 5 Days of the Fortresses in northeast Italy, near the Dolomites, and the 5 Jours de France, near Bordeaux. Great time, great orienteering. Can't wait for another.

The setting for our stay in Italy, the small town on the shelf in the middle of the picture. We were running in woods with slopes like this. On the "rest" day we hiked up to the top of the chair lift, the open area on the far right horizon. It was overcast as we hiked with thunder getting closer. We got to the refuge at the top of the lift just as the rains hit. So we stopped for refreshments and lunch. Handy. Then ran down the lift line back to town in the rain with thunder all about.

The town of Folgario: quaint, cute, all those things. A ski lift goes right up from just out of site.

Our hotel in Italy. We had the balcony room on the left/upper.

Our first day, before competition started, we went to a model map area to check out the mapping and what the woods were like. Afterwards we needed refreshments.

The encampment at the Finish, Day 1.

Our spot looking over the Finish Chute.

Lyn enjoying the ambiance of the Finish of Day 3, though neither of us had particularly good days here.

Refreshments always available, Day 3.

The finish area on Day 3

George -trying to catch up with Lyn, as always.

Lyn finishing on Day 5, Italy, Placing 2nd on the day, only 13 seconds back. A great result.
Scenes from France

Typical mass in the start/finish area - Day 1 of the French 5 Day.

Our valiant crew.

The leader on Day 1.

The "Result of the Week"

Our home in France, with our travelling team.
Visit to Bordeaux city

The gardens along the river in Bordeaux city.

The neat skim pond in the park along the river.

Nice way to cool off.

On our last day we drove over to St Emilion through the vinyards of Bordeaux. The town reminded us of "Chocolat"!

The streets were steep, but easy for us to manage.

The town square with the little cafes and wine shops all over.

We had a nice lunch at one of the out door cafes, drinking the local wine, of course.

Penwood Tarriffville Run
Nice run today along Metacomet Ridge from Penwood to Tarriffville and back. Still have solid snow cover with loose bit on top for good grip though was slick in a few short section that the sun got to and starting to give in a few others, esp towards end. Best part is snow covers the trap rock which makes this a rough run otherwise.

Wallyworld 7mi HTC Run & Tylers Mill O Run
Today was a long day to finish off the week. We combined the HTC Winter Series Wallyworld 7 mi run with another exploration of the Tylers Mill Open space area. Most of the run is through the Wallingford Town Forest and associated open space, about 1200 acres. The area is mostly open farm land, a winery, forest and a swamp though there is a string of mega-houses along the E side of the race course (blue line). The red line is our route through the woods and follows, more or less, a similar run we did with Gari, once upon a time.
